Hey everybody! This month’s update is on the body team. They have been working hard this past month, and they have made a lot of progress since their last update in January.
Every Saturday for the past month, they have been making trips to Doral Corporation, to layup the carbon fiber in the mold. Since then, they have done a full layup of the body for the gasoline vehicle with 3k 2×2 twill weave carbon fiber. The layup process involves placing a carbon fiber sheet in the mold and coating it with an epoxy resin. After allowing 7 days for the epoxy to cure while under vacuum pressure, areas that require reinforcement are marked and coated with another layer of carbon fiber in combination with epoxy resin absorbent foam base.
The new body weighs under twenty pounds; one third the weight of the body from last year! In addition to the weight savings, the width was decreased by four inches from last year to 34 inches, which resulted in a much reduced frontal area of 720 in2.
Future plans for the next coming weeks include cutting out the windows and hatches, attaching the body to the chassis, and applying an outer coat of paint.
We recently had the privilege of participating in the Milwaukee St. Patrick’s Day Parade along with the SAE Formula Hybrid Design Team.
We will be competing in the Shell Eco Marathon in Detroit, MI at the end of April, so stay tuned to see the results!
